Ranganathittu’s story begins in the 17th century, when Kanteerava Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the ruler of Mysore, built an embankment across the Kaveri River between 1645 and 1648. This led to the formation of several small islets, which soon became a haven for migratory and resident birds.
Fast forward to the 1940s, when legendary ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali visited the area. He was so impressed by the rich birdlife that he persuaded the then king of Mysore to declare it a protected area in 1940. That marked the official birth of Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary.
Over the years, the sanctuary has grown in ecological importance:
It now spans 40 acres and includes six islets
Home to 170+ bird species, including painted storks, pelicans, and kingfishers
Declared a Ramsar Wetland site in 2022, recognizing its global ecological value
Surrounded by a 28 sq km eco-sensitive zone since 2014, limiting commercial activity to protect its biodiversity
It’s not just birds that call this place home—otters, flying foxes, monitor lizards, and even crocodiles are part of the sanctuary’s vibrant ecosystem.
