'Concrete, Ash, and Rain'. 57.5 x 16.5 x 22.25 inches. Concrete, Ash Wood, Plywood, Latex Paint. 2024.
'Concrete, Ash, and Rain' is part of a series titled, 'Time Will Tell', which will ultimately include twenty-four, interactive, sound-generating, mechanical sculptures. Individually, the sculptures will vary in scale and material but will all generate the sound of rain.
The sculptures from the series exist at a juncture between Nature and humanity. Through the combining of features that are uniquely human with others that are distinctly natural, the work draws attention to our human relationship with Nature. The use of natural materials (substances that occur in nature and have not been artificially processed by humans) like wood, along side man-made, processed materials like concrete (common construction material), is metaphorical, representing the condition of that which is human butting up against Nature. In 'Concrete, Ash, and Rain', the sound of rain is created by a mechanical device that is obscured and altered by the concrete encasing it.
The piece features small, inverted funnel shapes, set into the concrete, which focus the sound and allow limited visual access to the activity inside. On the outside of the concrete are shapes standing out in relief. These shapes are weather symbols, one representing heavy, continuous rain, and the other, violent rain showers.
In 'Concrete, Ash, and Rain', access to the inner workings are hidden, leaving participants to imagine the source of sound.
The sound making mechanism is contained within concrete. As with all the pieces in the series, 'Time Will Tell', I'm exploring how different materials affect the characteristics of sound. Each piece approaches sound in a unique way, creating differing qualities of pitch, intensity, and timbre.
The sculptures in the series 'Time Will Tell' raise questions about technology, utility, purpose, and our relationship to Nature. Because they are interactive, the works in the series are not frozen in time but rather come alive within it. #rain
