Eileen Joyce by Bryce Morrison: Eileen, a supremely instinctive artist and the possessor of a facility that awed pianists such as Claudio Arrau, Leon Fleisher, Ivan Davis, Glenn Gould (enchanted by her Mozart) and Leif Ove Andsnes, had little need of scholarship or academic nicety to hone her talent. Asked about her brief work with Artur Schnabel she only remembered a mug of cocoa given her by 'a very nice man; you see I was a little girl from the Bush and I felt the cold terribly in Germany'. There was no mention of Beethoven, and on seeing me after her interview she hoped she wasn't 'too academic' — a delightful response to those who assume that intellectual expertise is a sine qua non of great pianism.

I should say that if waspish estimates of Eileen's art have been made, her records (which she described as 'very old-fashioned') live on as a testament to an extraordinary, indeed transcendental, gift. For one journalist, 'the more one listens, the more one perceives a low emotional temperature. There are passages of grace and subtlety but not sincere poignancy, her playing nimble but not full-blooded or rapturous. Her style forms the most elegant of hedgerows but it doesn't allow us to see the garden just beyond. Or perhaps we really do not want to see it.' At one level this is perceptive yet at another it misses the point. Eileen was an original - entirely her own person. And so I would like to end by saying thank you, dear Eileen, for all you have given us and, in my own case and thousands of others, for that early inspiration. You will always be cherished and remembered.
