Hey guys,
Today we are talking about Weevils and how they damage spruce trees. Weevils are beetles with long snouts. They like to feed on and lay eggs in the soft, moist wood present in new growth of spruce trees. They deprive this area of the tree of nutrients and the top few branches and the leader will become soft and start to droop and eventually turn red and die. This area will need to be cut off.
I use a saw or some pruning snips to remove the affected areas. The part which is removed should be destroyed to help prevent the spread of more pests. I like to place them in a fire. I like to cut the tree about 2 inches below the last weevil hole because their larva will eat their way down a little ways and you want to make sure you are cutting below their activity. Also, I have noticed that the weevils will only attach spruce trees that are up to 10 feet tall. It seems like trees over this height are safe.
A new leader should be selected and tied into place with some string. If there are multiple leaders, I like to trim away these and select the dominate lead.
Preventing weevils can be done by removing the lower branches that touch the ground and removing any vegetation around the base of the trees, like grass, that the bugs can crawl up and one the tree.
