Roșie Mae's Alpaca Farm haș nine Huacaya Alpacas in their herd. The herd is split into two herd groups, a male herd group, and a female herd group. In the email herd group, they have Ms. Fine(9), Crystal Rose(8), Vanna(6), Tiny Dancer(3), and Velvet(17 months). In the male herd group, they have Theo(2), Cosmo(2), Captain America(17 months), and Rain Maker(17 months).

The Alpaca is a species of South American camelid. It is similar to, and often confused with, the llama. However, alpacas are often noticeably smaller than llamas and weigh between 140 lbs and 180 lbs. The alpacas and the llamas are closely related mammals in the camelid family that can successfully crossbreed. The alpacas are specifically for their fiber. The alpaca fiber is known as "The Fiber of The Gods". The Alpaca fiber is the softest, most thermally efficient fiber that possesses water and flame-resistant properties. Rosie Mae's alpacas are sheared by professionals once a year during April. Each shearing at Rosie Mae's yields approximately 3.5 to 7.5 pounds of fiber per alpaca. An adult alpaca might yield 35 ounces to 75 ounces of first-quality fiber as well as 40 ounces to 80 ounces of second-quality fiber. The quality of alpaca fiber is determined by the crimping. The greater the number of small folds (zig-zagging of the fiber) in the fiber, the greater the quality. The third-quality fiber yield can vary by alpaca. Last spring, Velvet won first place and third overall during an alpaca show because she had very good fiber. Alpaca fiber comes in more than 16 solid colors and up to 22 of the multi-colored in the United States. White alpaca fiber is the most common and Black/White is the rarest.

Note: There are two breeds of alpacas, Huacayas and Suris. Rosie Mae's has Huacayas.
