Kidney transplant education using the Explore Transplant Ontario package increases transplant knowledge in ESRD patients

In this pilot study, we investigated a novel approach to educating patients about kidney transplant and donation, to facilitate informed decision making and promote living donation. Patients in the intervention group received access to Explore Transplant Ontario (ETO) - a comprehensive, multimedia education tool, containing videos with testimonials from patients, families and donors, alongside informational brochures about transplant and donating a kidney. Questionnaires were used to assess the impact of ETO on patient's knowledge and readiness to pursue living donor kidney transplant. Usage of the ETO program led to a significant increase in transplant knowledge and readiness to pursue living donor kidney transplant, compared to a control group receiving transplant education as usual.

 

Fatigue is a debilitating symptom experienced by many patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD). Identifying potentially modifiable correlates of fatigue may help to develop ways to more efficiently manage fatigue in patients with ESKD. We showed that depression, anxiety and social distress are associated with higher fatigue scores in patients with end-stage kidney disease, independent of many clinical and socio-demographic factors, including ethnicity.
