where the dogs won’t go
barefoot in ash
with knives on their hips
and voices like riverbed stone

like old engines

they remind you what you are.

for thunder

just firewood
and time

they pluck thorns
from their arms
and plant ‘em like seeds
watching them grow
into things

the youngest one
said my shadow looked tired
I told her

she laughed

they don’t curse,

just walked slow
boots heavy
