UKR, or unicondylar knee replacement, targets just one damaged compartment of your knee. After spinal anesthesia is administered, the surgical site is prepped and your leg is positioned on a leg holder, allowing for optimal implant placement.

The incision, typically 7-10 cm, is smaller than that used in a total knee replacement (TKR). This minimally invasive approach means less tissue dissection. Surgeons use this small incision as a "window" to assess the damaged compartment and ensure the lateral compartment is healthy. If the lateral compartment is also damaged, a TKR may be necessary.

During the procedure, dead bone is removed from the affected compartment and replaced with UKR components: a femoral component, a tibial component, and a special plastic insert. Approximately 3mm of bone is removed from the femoral and tibial sides to accommodate these components.

This precise replacement allows the knee to feel remarkably natural. The minimally invasive nature of UKR often leads to faster recovery and a quicker return to normal activities.
