The window tax was a unique form of property taxation implemented in England, Wales, and Scotland from 1696 until its repeal in 1851 in England and Wales, and 1852 in Scotland. It was introduced by King William III as a way to generate revenue without directly taxing income. Under this system, homeowners paid a flat-rate house tax plus an additional charge based on the number of windows in their property.

The tax was designed to reflect wealth, assuming that larger houses with more windows belonged to the richer class. However, it led to unintended architectural consequences. Many homeowners bricked up their windows to reduce the number taxed, creating dark, poorly ventilated living spaces. This had negative health implications, contributing to dampness, respiratory illnesses, and lack of natural light in urban housing.

The window tax became widely unpopular, earning the nickname “daylight robbery” because it deprived people of light and fresh air. It also hindered architectural design and urban aesthetics for over 150 years, with bricked-up window spaces still visible in older buildings today as silent witnesses of this historical tax policy. Its repeal came after long-standing public health concerns and advocacy against its social and environmental impact.
