‘Okay, the left pedal is the brake. The right is the gas.’
‘Left, brake. Right, gas. Gotcha. And this? Is this how I change gears?’
‘That’s an air freshener.’
‘You didn’t answer my question.’
‘That stick next to your leg is how you switch gears. Right now, you’re in neutral.’
‘Do I wanna be in neutral?’
‘That depends. Do you want to go forwards, backwards, or stay in the same spot?’
‘I wanna go forwards.’
‘Okay, pop the clutch and put it in first. Make sure you keep your foot on the brake, though.’
‘Pop the clutch. Right. Poppin’ the clutch. Here I go. One popped clutch, comin’ right up. Pop, pop. That’s the sound the clutch is gonna make when I pop it.’
‘Su?’
‘Yah?’
‘That’s the air freshener.’
‘I know. I know. I’m not stupid.’
‘I didn’t say you were. Try looking under the wheel. Notice anything?’
‘That’s where my feet are.’
‘They sure are. Notice anything else? Like, I dunno, a third pedal off to the side, or something.’
‘A third pedal? What are you, dumb? Cars go vroom and skrrrch and that’s it. Who ever heard of a car with three—Oh! Chiha, there’s a third pedal down here!’
‘No way, really? I wonder what it could be.’
‘I know! I know what it could be. It’s the air freshener.’
‘It’s the clutch, dum-dum.’
‘Wow. Rude, much? I’m doing my best…’
‘I’m sorry. You’re doing great. Here, I’ll tell you what to do next. Put your left foot on the clutch.’
‘‘kay.’
‘Put your right hand on the gearshift.’
‘‘kay.’
‘Push the gearshift all the way left, then up. That’ll put you in first.’
‘Like this?’
‘Yes, but notice how we’re rolling forward? Make sure to keep your other foot on the brake.’
‘Which one’s the brake?’
‘The left pedal.’
‘I thought that was the clutch.’
‘The clutch isn’t a pedal.’
‘But you called it a pedal earlier.’
‘Okay, fine. It is a pedal. But from context you should be able to deduce that if the leftmost pedal is the clutch, then it’s not the brake. Which means that if the brake is on the left, and it’s not the clutch, then…?’
‘Um. Uh. Oh! It’s the air freshener!’
‘NO! It’s the pedal next to the gas!’
‘Which one’s the gas?’
‘The one on the right!’
‘The right of what? The clutch? But there’s two pedals to the right of the clutch! You aren’t being very helpful, Chiha, I have to say.’
‘Listen to me. If you don’t stomp on the brake right now, we are going in that ditch.’
‘What ditch?’
‘Hit the brakes!’
‘I don’t know which pedal it is!’
‘Then just pick one!’
‘‘kay!’
‘That’s the gas!’
‘Huh? More gas? ‘kay!’
Narrator: Now, the good ol’ FLOW GIRL girls don’t cotton to reckless drivin’. But there’s somethin’ to be said for riding several tons of airborne RV over the tops of pine trees after hittin’ a slanted embankment at 80 miles per hour. Thank goodness for seat-belts and airbags.
Su would later describe the experience as 'like going on a magic carpet ride’. Chihaya declined to comment other than to say that teaching Su to drive stick-shift was ‘the biggest mistake of her life’.
