Instead, it hit 180 degrees. At this temperature and lithostatic pressure, the granite underwent a rheological shift. It stopped behaving like a solid and started behaving like a plastic. But the heat wasn't the only anomaly. As they pulled the drilling mud to the surface, it was boiling with hydrogen gas. A massive volume of hydrogen coming from a depth where it shouldn't exist.
