The Lindenhof hill, located high above the Limmat, has always been an important military position. The Celts, Romans and Ottonians built their settlements on the site where the lodge of Zurich Freemasons stands today.
However, the event taking place at the end of the 13th century is unique in that a heavily armored army of women and girls gathered at the Lindenhof in 1292.
In the 13th century, the people of Zurich fought against Winterthur and suffered a heavy defeat. Many of Zürich's warriors fell, and then Austrian Duke Albrecht I. of Habsburg sensed his chance to seize Zürich without much effort.
As Albrecht's troops stood before the city gates, according to legend, the Zurich women and girls gathered in the Münsterhof. Led by Hedwig of Burghalden, clad in heavy armour, with spear and shield. Under drums and with waving flags, the women then led a war parade to the Lindenhof and formed an army there.
Albrecht I. watched this spectacle from afar, this mighty thundering army assembled inside the Lindenhof and brandishing their weapons. Believing that an army of Zurich men was still in the city, he broke the siege and retreated in disappointment. Thanks to an ingenious move, the city remained unscathed.
The fountain at the Lindenhof was dedicated to the brave women of Zurich. Today's Lindenhofbrunnen, also called Hedwigbrunnen, was built in 1912. It received a sculpture of a woman in chain armor, with a sword at her side and a spear in her hand, from the artist Gustav Silber.
