Emmanuel Bellanger: Danse sacrée, Danse profane dates from 1904. Debussy was then in the full flowering of his art: his opera Pelléas et Mélisande had been premiered in 1902. Debussy left us no religious or sacred works, and that's what interests us about him: as a pioneer, he drew on an aesthetic tradition that went far beyond what was known as tradition in his time. We can discern in his music the musical resonances between creation and a certain tradition coming from the world of liturgy. Without it being clearly expressed, this is indeed a dialogue between culture and worship. In these dances, we hear reminiscences of ancient and Gregorian modality. We are in the midst (1904) of the restoration of Gregorian chant by the monks of Solesmes, both in terms of rhythm and modal scales; all these questions agitated the composers and musicographers of the time. We also know of Claude Debussy's interest in the ancient sculptures he discovered in the Louvre Museum.
The term "sacred" is not to be understood here in the usual sense, but rather as hieratic, solemn, noble: this dance is a sarabande, a slow dance that gives the impression of a mysterious cult. The Danse sacrée is written in Dorian mode, which gives this beautiful piece its distinctive character. The Danse profane, which follows directly on from it, is a languorous waltz, swirling in another ancient mode, the Lydian, which also lends an almost exotic color to this music. This color also comes from the unusual instrumentation: Danse sacrée, Danse profane was commissioned by Pleyel to promote a harp of their own manufacture. The work is written for harp and string orchestra. One might say to musicians what Debussy said to pianists performing his sonata for cello and piano: "the piano doesn't fight against the cello, it accompanies it." Here, the strings don't fight the harp, they accompany it. https://www.narthex.fr/blogs/ils-ont-...
We offer two versions for comparative listening, the first with harp and full orchestra, the second with harp and chamber orchestra. Nice listening
