Train : 15550 Patna - Jaynagar Intercity Express
Loco : Samastipur WAP7 #37145

The Jaynagar–Patna Intercity Express is an Intercity train belonging to East Central Railway zone that runs between Patna Junction and Jaynagar in India. It is currently being operated with 15549/15550 train numbers. It runs 6 days a week, except on Saturdays.

This train was inaugurated on 13th August 2017, post the completion of the Digha-Sonpur Bridge in 2016.

JOURNEY DETAILS

This was my first train journey completely inside the state of Bihar, after partially travelling by Dibrugarh Rajdhani via Samastipur. Interestingly, I did cross the Rajdhani just outside Samastipur on this journey.

I was on my way to Darbhanga to board the Bihar Sampark Kranti Express to New Delhi. The video can be seen here.

The train had 1 2S, 1 AC Chair Car, and other coaches were unreserved general compartments on the day I travelled. The train was moderately packed at Patna Jn, but was completely full by Pataliputra. The crowd eased a little at Hajipur, but a fresh crowd got in as well, bound for Muzaffarpur and Samastipur.

The train almost emptied itself out at Darbhanga Jn.

TRAIN DETAILS

The train was inaugurated in 2017 post the completion of the new bridge over River Ganga. Earlier, the only route to Samastipur from Patna was via Barauni, crossing River Ganga over the Rajendra Setu Bridge constructed under the guidance of Sir Visveswaraya. It is one of the most popular trains for people to reach interior Bihar from Patna. The train has one reversal at Samastipur Jn. It used to be hauled by an Alco from Samastipur DLS, but post electrification, it gets a WAP7 from Samastipur ELS.

DIGHA-SONPUR SETU BRIDGE

The Digha–Sonpur bridge (Hindi: दीघा-सोनपुर पुल) or J. P. Setu (Hindi: जेपी सेतु) is a rail-cum-road steel truss bridge across river Ganga, connecting Digha Ghat in Patna and Pahleja Ghat in Sonpur. It is named after Indian independence activist Jayaprakash Narayan. It provides easy roadway and railway link between north and south Bihar.

It is 4,556m in length and the second longest rail-cum-road bridge in India, after Bogibeel Bridge in Assam. It is also the longest bridge across River Ganga currently. Rail service was inaugurated on this route on 3 February 2016.

This is second railway bridge in Bihar after Rajendra Setu that connects North Bihar to South Bihar. Indian Railways has constructed two railway stations on either sides of the bridge – Digha Bridge Halt (DGBA) and Bharpura Pahleja Ghat Junction (PHLG). A new station was built as Patliputra Jn to provide for Patna City on this line.
