পুর্বপরিকল্পনা অনুযায়ী ১৯৭১ সালের ২৫ মার্চ রাতে পাকিস্তানি সামরিক বাহিনী শুরু করে অপারেশন সার্চ লাইট নামের গণহত্যার বাস্তবায়ন। রাজারবাগ পুলিশ লাইন্স, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, ইপিআর সহ পুরো ঢাকা শহরেই চলে নির্বিচারে গণহত্যা। গণহত্যার সাথে চলে অগ্নিকান্ড। পুরো শহর পরিণত হয় মৃত্যুপুরীতে। জারি করা হয় কারফিউ। আওয়ামীলীগকে নিষিদ্ধ ঘোষণা করা হয়। ছাত্রজনতা রাস্তায় রাস্তায় ব্যারিকেড দিয়ে প্রতিরোধ গড়ে তোলে। কিন্তু কোন কিছুই থামাতে পারেনি সেই গণহত্যার তাণ্ডব। এত কম সময়ে এত মানুষ হত্যার নজির পৃথিবীর আর কোথাও বোধয় নেই। এই গণহত্যা, দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধে জার্মানির নাস্যি বাহিনীর বর্বরতাকেও হার মানায়। যদিও এই গণহত্যার জন্য পাকিস্তানী সামরিক বাহিনী, পাকিস্তান সরকার কোনদিন ক্ষমা চাওয়া কিংবা দুঃখ প্রকাশ করেনি। বাংলাদেশে এই দিনটি জাতীয় গণহত্যা দিবস হিসেবে পালিত হয়। কেমন ছিলো ২৫ মার্চের সেই রাতের ভয়াবহতা? সেই সময়ের প্রতক্ষ্যদর্শীর বয়ানে আমরা জানার চেষ্টা করেছি ইতিহাসের সেই রাতের কথা।

According to the pre-plan, on the night of March 25, 1971, the Pakistani military launched Operation Search Light to carry out the genocide. Rajarbagh Police Lines, Dhaka University, EPR and the whole city of Dhaka indiscriminate genocide. The fire went with the genocide. The whole city became a place of death. Curfew was imposed. Awami League was banned. The students formed a resistance by barricading the streets. But nothing could stop the genocide. There is no other place in the world where so many people have been killed in such a short time. The genocide also defeats the brutality of Germany's Nazi forces in World War II. Although the Pakistani military is responsible for the massacre, the Pakistani government has never apologized or expressed regret. In Bangladesh, this day is celebrated as National Genocide Day. What was the horror of that night of March 25? We have tried to know from the eyewitness accounts of that time about that night of history.
