On June 13, 2024, The National Endowment for Democracy honored The Regional Center for Human Rights (RCHR) with the Democracy Award for their ground-breaking work seeking accountability for forcibly abducted Ukrainian children.

RCHR is an association of professional lawyers, advocates, human rights defenders, and activists. Their activities include documenting the international crimes of the Russian Federation, and protecting property rights, the right to freedom of movement, and citizenship. RCHR recently contributed to Ukrainian civil society’s ground-breaking work, legal arguments, and supporting evidence to hold Vladmir Putin and Russian leaders responsible for unlawful deportation and displacement of children from the temporarily occupied territories in Ukraine. The case resulted in an unprecedented move by the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova.

Kateryna Rashevska is a legal expert at the Regional Center for Human Rights. She is a PhD fellow at the Institute of International Relations (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv). She is a member of the Interdepartmental Commission on the Application and Implementation of International Humanitarian Law in Ukraine, the Expert Council at the Representation of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the SQDI (Société québécoise de droit internationale). Kateryna protects the rights of vulnerable categories of victims of international crimes, namely children, at the ECHR, the OSCE, the EU, the OHCHR and the ICC. She is an author of the Submissions to the ICC related to international crimes committed against the Ukrainian children by Maria Lvova-Belova and Vladimir Putin. She is also an author and a driver of the draft resolution of the UN General Assembly on repatriation of illegally deported children. Together with the team of the Regional Center for Human Rights, Kateryna developed and now advocates the concept of a unified legal mechanism for the return of displaced Ukrainian children
