It must have been a glorious day on the 1st July 1960. The Germans have a wonderful word that describes the feeling one must have had when driving this lovely Mercedes-Benz Ponton convertible out of the local Mercedes-Benz dealership’s showroom: “Fabelhaft”! And that description would have been spot-on, the first owner did everything right when ordering. He ordered a manual Mercedes-Benz W128 220SE Ponton convertible. The E in SE stands for “Einspitzer” which means injection. The injection version not only runs better than the carburettor version, it is also far more powerful. The straight-six engine in this configuration develops 120 Hp coupled to a 4-speed manual column shift. The 220SE was already a rare car when it came out. With a total run of only 1,112 cars you can just imagine how rare it is these days. As an added bonus, our car is in a lovely condition. It has recently been specialist restored in Germany. The bodywork has nice and thin and correctly aligned panels. The white paintwork is of a high quality and in a very good state. The new hood closes perfectly and is a high quality item. For the days you choose to drive around with the top down, the red tonneau cover will compliment the interior trim perfectly. Inside the car is as lovely as on the outside. The seat front and back are upholstered in fine red leather and the carpets are as good as new. The dashboard and doors have burr wood inlays that are in very good condition. All instruments and switches are in good working order. Mechanically the car has been very well maintained. The engine runs smoothly and propels the stately convertible effortlessly. The manual column shift suits the car’s relaxed aura and works perfectly. In short a fantastic top-quality Mercedes-Benz 220SE convertible both to look at and drive!
