Mali's army says it has arrested three Europeans as part of operations against extremists. The arrests took place over the weekend in the central town of Diabaly, about 300 kilometers northwest of the capital, Bamako. A total of five suspects are being held, according to a statement. The army did not identify the apprehended persons, and no further details have been disclosed about the exercise. Mali has been battling an insurgency for more than a decade.
The arrest in Mali comes amid heightened insecurity in the country as well as neighboring countries like Burkina Faso and Nigeria. This despite the presence of the G5 Sahel joint force launched five years ago.
