After all the critical safety issues concerning Hartzell/Whirlwind's hub, Catto created a specific ground adjustable propeller specific to the HUGE speed envelope of the RANS S-21. We put these propellers HEAD to HEAD and compare these categories: Safety, Maximum Speed, Engine Cooling, Ease of Pitching, Climb Performance, Acceleration, Efficiency, and Smoothness.

We start by scooping ‪@PatagoniaBushPilots‬ Queque from Argentina flying the new Carbon Cub UL (Rotax 916iS) and fly to ‪@TrentonPalmer‬ via Dead Cow Lakebed. We get snowed in for a few days, so we install vortex generators on the Backcountry Bogey. Once the weather clears, we fly to Catto Propellers' factory in Jackson, California when Trent Palmer does a pull test in his new Legend Nomad with Rotax 916iS armed with a 3-blade Catto propeller. Catto is also refining the design of their constant speed prop for the Rotax 916 so they're setting the baseline. Meanwhile, paint still drying, we install the prototype Catto propeller designed for the RANS on the S-21 and after some initial safety and performance testing, we take it directly to the backcountry to put it to the test with some pilots from the STOL Rats of Redbluff. After the eye candy, I review the results of the 8 categories and get into the exact performance data. Reminder, these tests are conducted on an S-21 with 29" Alaskan Bush Wheels and no strut fairings! So the drag penalties are equal, but real.
