Hey guys! The weather is getting nicer, and restrictions are lifting AND we are excited to get outside and explore the wonderful Scottish landscape.
One of our goals this year was to go back to Old Man Coniston and attempt to complete it. We had tried once before in the Autumn of 2019 but we were both morbidly obese back then (thats not us being harsh, that was the actual BMI category we were in)! Since then we have both lost a considerable amount of weight and are feeling so much better for it! We were going to gradually increase our walking fitness this year by doing lots of local walks, but we were invited by some friends to spend a day hiking up Lochnagar which is a Munro!!!
Obviously this sounded like a lot of fun, but we weren't sure if we were ready yet! Luckily our friends had done it before, and aren't hiking enthusiasts so this made us feel reassured, surely if they've done it before and want to attempt it again then it can't be that bad right?!?
So we met at 10am in the Spittal of Glen Muick Car Park, the route starts flat for a few kilometers and you can enjoy the views of Loch Muick, then we went through a very picturesque little woodland and out into the steep climb. Luckily we kept taking breaks on the way up to refuel and enjoy the views. One of our favourite points was the Falls of Glass Alt, which is a stunning waterfall. If you wanted to attempt a mini version of this walk you could go up to the waterfall and back the way you came, and it would still be a decent hike!
After the waterfall we continued up, it was cold, windy, a bit foggy and HARD WORK! Everytime it felt like it was getting difficult we would stop, and look back over the amazing views, which really made you appreciate how high you had walked.
SPOILER ALERT!
We made it to the top YIPEE!!! Of course you have to have a photoshoot at the top to prove it.
Afterwards we took shelter from the wind behind some rocks and tucked into a lunch. Which was an epic fail! We took a camping stove, gas and water to boil and add to a pasta pot! But it was so cold and windy that the water was taking forever to boil. We ended up giving up and adding luke warm water to the pasta which did not cook it! Of course we still ate it, but it was not enjoyable!
We were way to ambitious with trying to cook a hot meal, and we completely underestimated how many calories we should have taken with us to fuel us on the walk!
Next time we will be bringing way more snacks!!!
After our pathetic lunch things got a bit sketchy, we were all tired, cold and our muscles had seized up from stopping for so long! To make things worse the weather had turned, suddenly the cold layer was a lot thicker and it felt like no one was around! The path was difficult to follow because of the weather, and snow on the ground. We had to take a detour over a boulder section, which was actually really fun, but not ideal!
Finally we were out of the weather, and back on the path, the only thing we had to deal with now was our aching muscles and hunger! Luckily our friend Matt was a true hero and had a cheeky pack of Rich Tea Biscuits that he shared out, this was a much needed calorie and sugar boost that we all needed!
When we finally got towards the car park we were greeted by a beautiful group of wild deer, which were really impressive to see up close! This was a real treat at the end of a long day!
The walk took us a total of 8 hours, 6 and half were moving hours, the rest were breaks.
