One of the goals in the AHS’s strategic plan is to engage a diverse and inclusive membership. We do this by our commitment to making and sharing new repertoire, and also by inspiring the individual creativity of our members. This month, we feature some of our members committed to this goal. Angelica Hairston, Dr. Mallory McHenry, and Robbin Gordon-Cartier presented a concert of music for harp and harp ensemble as part of their work with Ms. Hairston’s non-profit Challenge the Stats (challengethestats.org), which exists to empower BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) artists and use music as a tool for social justice both inside and outside of the concert hall.

The first work, Winter Holiday from Four Seasonal Sketches, is by Betty Jackson King (1928-1944) and arranged by Mallory McHenry. Betty Jackson King studied at Roosevelt University in Chicago, where she studied piano, voice, and composition. She went on to teach at several high schools and universities, and served as president of the National Association of Negro Musicians from 1970-1984.
