Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim virtually attended a London event hosted by British think-tank Chatham House on Thursday. Via teleconference, she took questions from journalists and the audience. Cross-strait relations were a key issue of concern. Let’s hear from the VP.

Hsiao Bi-khim
Vice president
War is not an option and dialogue is the only way forward. Although Beijing continues to impose preconditions that are unacceptable to the people of Taiwan, our doors will continue to be open to dialogue based on parity and respect. An element of continuity from the former President Tsai to the current President Lai is we will not provoke but neither will we submit to coercion.

During the event, Hsiao said the CCP had set unreasonable preconditions for dialogue with Taiwan. She emphasized that Beijing was the provocateur in the cross-strait relationship, not Taiwan. She said that China should seek to assure Taiwan by renouncing the use of force.
