Landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) exist in various parts of the world, rendering large areas uninhabitable and dangerous. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is providing invaluable humanitarian assistance in detecting and helping coordinate the removal of landmines and ERW to make former conflict zones safe.
As part of NEC’s Humanitarian Aid Project, NEC Corporation and NEC Laboratories Europe are collaborating with the ICRC in a proof of concept to develop a humanitarian AI platform that will improve demining activities. NEC Laboratories Europe Senior Researcher Dr. Gürkan Solmaz explains how we are working with the ICRC to apply data analytics and AI technology to predict where landmines and ERW are buried.
The NEC humanitarian AI platform uses historical and geographical data with contextual information to create a risk table to help operators prioritize areas that have a high likelihood of buried mines. NEC Laboratories Europe is contributing to the ICRC proof of concept by developing machine learning models to predict the risk of landmines and ERW for given regions using geospatial datasets.
