The Exotic Beehive Ginger Plant

Описание к видео The Exotic Beehive Ginger Plant

In this video, Logee's horticulturist and third generation owner, Byron Martin, talks about Beehive ginger, or Zingiber spectabile. A rhizomatous perennial, Beehive ginger is a member of the Zingiberaceae family, which also includes other ginger types such as torch ginger, Thai ginger, and cardamom. Native to southeast Asia, it's usually grown as an ornamental plant in the west, but it can also be eaten like common ginger. The plant derives its name from the cone-shaped bracts resembling beehives. This clumping herbaceous plant thrives in warm, wet and frost-free climates similar to its natural habitat. Under ideal conditions, Beehive ginger plants can grow up to 15 feet tall or more.
