It’s Mister C, and today we’re going to do something that seems impossible — we’re going to make a paper clip float on water! 😲 That’s right, even though a paper clip is made of metal and usually sinks right to the bottom, with a little patience and some science, we can get it to rest gently on the surface of the water.

So, how does it work? It’s all about something called surface tension. Water molecules are super attracted to each other — they like to stick together. At the surface of the water, these molecules form a kind of “skin,” called a surface tension layer. This layer is strong enough to hold up light objects, like a paper clip, if we place it just right.

To try this at home, all you need is:

A small bowl or cup of water
A regular paper clip
A fork, toothpick, or even a steady hand

Here’s the trick: if you gently lower the paper clip onto the water using the fork or toothpick, you won’t break that surface tension, and the paper clip will stay floating. But if you just drop it in? SPLASH! Down it goes.

This experiment is a perfect way to see cohesion — that’s the science word for water molecules sticking together — in action. And it gets even cooler if you add a drop of dish soap. The soap breaks that surface tension, and WHOOSH — your floating paper clip sinks!

Try this experiment at home and see how many paper clips you can float at once. Can you predict what will happen if you change the size of the clip or the temperature of the water?
