→ Join me on a once in a blue moon flight aboard United Airlines as they utilize their heavy birds on one of their generally under demanded routes — Las Vegas to Los Angeles! This is an absolute avgeek's dream — 42 minutes on a widebody in first class! The reason United scheduled all these widebody flights on just this one day is still unknown — but either way, I took FULL advantage of them! Initially, my route that day was going to be LAS-LAX-LAS-SFO-LAS — all on 777's. But United saw how empty these flights were and ended up combining a bunch of the SFO flights into 1 flight practically eliminating any chance I had of getting on an SFO bound 777. It would have been the Star Alliance one too! Uggh. Moving on to the next adventure, though. We begin at one of LAS's several widebody gates, gate D57, and pushback. Winds were out of the west, so we taxi to runway 26R. Does anyone else notice widebody pilots tend to taxi slower than narrowbody pilots? Or is that just me? We line up and wait on runway 26R before applying power for takeoff. The roar of the GE90's on this bird is nothing short of intoxicating! Since this flight was SO light, our climb performance out of Las Vegas was spectacular. We get great views of the airfield and the Strip as we climb out. As we navigate out of the semi-crowed airspace of KLAS, we ascend over the dry desert of which is Nevada. We cross into California and fly over the San Gabriel Mountains and begin our slow descent into Los Angeles. Flying a nearly straight-in approach to LAX, we land on runway 25L very softly. This being my second time in first-class aboard a 777, it's always funny when you can barely feel the main gear touch, but the nose gear feels like it was slammed down. We taxi to ramp C7 and shut down the engines. As advised by the captain, we are such a large aircraft in such a tight alley, we were required to shut down the massive engines and be tugged into the gate to avoid massive jet blast into nearby gates. We get tugged into gate 72A and set the parking brake. I hope you enjoy this short widebody flight aboard United Airlines as much as I did, and, as always, all the flight information you could ever desire can be found below!
