Did you know one British man shaped the way millions of Indians still study today?
That man was Thomas Babington Macaulay — and in 1835, he introduced a radical shift in India’s education system.

Before Macaulay, India had traditional systems like Gurukuls and Madarsas, focusing on Sanskrit, Persian, and Indian philosophy. But Macaulay believed these systems were “useless” for creating a British-style administration.

In his famous Macaulay’s Minute, he pushed for English education, stating that it would create “a class of Indians who are Indian in blood, but English in taste, intellect, and morals.” His aim was to produce clerks and loyal British subjects to run the empire.

This led to the replacement of traditional education with Western-style schools, English-medium teaching, and focus on British literature and science.

While it did modernize parts of Indian education, it also caused cultural disconnect, loss of indigenous knowledge, and created a class divide that we still see today.
