Nursing theory serves as a foundational pillar in academic nursing, guiding both clinical practice and educational pedagogy. For future nurse educators, the ability to effectively teach theory is essential to fostering critical thinking and professional identity in nursing students (McEwen & Wills, 2018). Despite its significance, many students report difficulty in connecting abstract theoretical concepts to practical, real-world nursing care (Demagny-Warmoes et al., 2025). Therefore, nurse educators should be equipped not only with a deep understanding of theory, but also with evidence-based instructional strategies to promote theory integration across various learning levels.
This lesson introduces future academic nurse educators to effective methods of teaching nursing theory, grounded in constructivist learning theory. Constructivism emphasizes active learning through the connection of new information to prior knowledge, encouraging learners to develop meaning through reflection, application, and collaboration. Key instructional strategies aligned with this theory, such as case-based learning, team-based learning (TBL), concept mapping, and reflective questioning. These strategies are particularly well-suited for teaching middle range theories that bridge grand theoretical frameworks and practice-level application. These strategies promote student engagement, critical analysis, and the translation of theoretical concepts into clinical reasoning (Billings & Halstead, 2020).
To reinforce these pedagogical approaches, this lesson will apply each method to Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort, a middle range nursing theory frequently used in both education and practice. Through this application, students will not only deepen their understanding of the theory itself but also gain practical experience designing learning activities that make theory meaningful and relevant for nursing students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Ultimately, this lesson aims to prepare future nurse educators to confidently and creatively teach nursing theory as an essential component of professional nursing curricula.
