In the Great American Rail Journeys series, host Michael Portillo explores Alaska’s iconic rail routes as part of his travel-by-train adventure across the United States and into Canada, guided by a historical 19th-century railroad guidebook. In the Alaska episodes, he travels on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, a historic narrow-gauge rail line originally built during the Klondike Gold Rush to carry prospectors and supplies from the port town of Skagway, Alaska, into the rugged mountains and onward toward the Yukon’s goldfields.


The White Pass & Yukon Route—often called a Gold Rush train—is celebrated for both its dramatic scenery and engineering feats. It climbs nearly 3,000 feet through mountain gorges, over trestles and through tunnels, providing breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, deep canyons, waterfalls, glaciers and forests.

Within the episode, Portillo learns about the history of the railroad’s construction at the tail end of the gold rush, and how railroads like this helped transform transportation in America’s frontier.
