Section 2.2 of the AP Biology curriculum - Cell Structure and Function - looks at how the various organelles within cells create different functions. This section first dives into the endomembrane system and how it creates compartmentalization of the cell - allowing many different biochemical reactions to take place in different environments. These reactions are necessary to repair and maintain cellular components. Specifically, we will take a look at the endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi complex, lysosomes, and vacuoles. Then, we will see how cells capture, store, and utilize energy. The two organelles responsible for this process are chloroplasts (which store energy from the sun in the bonds of glucose) and mitochondria (which are capable of moving the energy from glucose into the bonds of ATP).
