This short video demonstrates the 3 new major features coming to the latest release of Blender. Blender 3.0 is a huge step forward.

Despite the number change, it might not be a shocking revolution as the Blender 2.80 release was with its User Interface redesign and introduction of real-time renderer EEVEE. Not being revolutionary is probably not a bad thing at all in this case. The new features are big and impactful yet they feel like a natural extension of what is already good.

The three new main features are :
1. Geometry nodes (not really a new feature, but it gets a huge overhaul with a new ‘fields' paradigm and extension with lots of new nodes. It seems like a pretty robust and working solution for procedural modeling now. The latest Nodevember creations from blender magicians prove the point. Check out these amazing artists using geometry nodes mentioned in the video:

2. Cycles X - a completely rewritten from scratch version of Blender’s main rendering engine. The rendering time speedups are huge, amounting up to 3 - 5 times faster than the previous version on GPU. DJ shows his own little test showing a double-time as fast result on a rather dated 1080Ti card. Even AMD users can be content. Finally, basic support for the HIP is here. And with upcoming versions, things may finally get better for non-Nvidia card owners. CPU performance is not that great though, in some cases (like DJ’s little donut test) it might even be a tiny bit slower as the tile rendering mode is replaced with progressive default.

3. Asset Library - a long-awaited addition to Blender that finally makes managing assets in a scene and across projects much less of a pain. Currently, you can mark objects, materials, worlds, and actions as assets and organize them in libraries for easier reuse. Now adding new objects from your library is as easy as dragging and dropping. Animators will be even more excited cause the asset browser includes a super handy pose library feature. It allows you to save poses for parts and whole rigs to apply from the library by simply clicking the thumbnail. A hidden gem in it is the option of click-dragging a mouse over the thumb to apply the pose gradually, as with a slider.


These features are only the tip of the iceberg of all the updates and improvements of Blender 3.0. The new version is faster, more polished, and has almost all the areas improved including modeling, sculpting, texture painting, and even video editing.
