The Pheasant-tailed Jacana (Hydrophasianus chirurgus), also known as Lilly trotter, is a remarkable bird species belonging to the jacana family (Jacanidae). It is known for its unique, elongated tail feathers that resemble those of a pheasant as well as its long and slender legs accompanied by elongated, delicate, and spindly toes.
One intriguing behaviour of these birds is the male's significant involvement in incubation and parental care, displaying a distinctive form of polyandry where females mate with multiple males. The eggs typically have an incubation period of about 21–22 days.
Pheasant-tailed Jacanas inhabit freshwater wetlands characterized by floating vegetation, such as marshes, ponds, lakes, and flooded fields. Their diet primarily consists of insects, molluscs, small invertebrates, and aquatic vegetation like seeds, algae, and other plant materials.
Wetlands play vital roles in the lives of agropastoral communities. Not only do they support biodiversity, but they also provide a reliable water supply for agriculture, grazing resources for livestock, and fertile soils for crop production. Wetlands offer ecosystem services such as water purification and flood mitigation and hold cultural and socioeconomic value. Despite facing various threats, such as habitat loss, agricultural practices, human disturbance, hunting, climate change, and invasive species, the Pheasant-tailed Jacana is currently categorized as "Least Concern" by the IUCN. However, it is crucial to implement conservation efforts focused on habitat protection, restoration, and raising awareness to ensure the long-term survival of this species.
