The Catanese Sicilian dialect is a regional variety of the Sicilian language spoken primarily in and around Catania, on the eastern coast of Sicily near Mount Etna; it belongs to the Eastern Sicilian group and is known for distinctive phonetic traits such as strong consonant gemination (doubling), the frequent use of retroflex or affricated sounds where Standard Italian has simpler consonants, and vowel outcomes shaped by historical contact with Greek and later Romance influences. Its vocabulary preserves many archaic Sicilian forms alongside borrowings from Italian, and its intonation is often described as more abrupt and rhythmic than Western Sicilian varieties. While mutually intelligible with other Sicilian dialects to a degree, Catanese has recognizable local pronunciations and lexical choices that mark regional identity, and like most Sicilian speech today it exists in diglossia with Standard Italian, which dominates formal contexts.
