Direct Memory Access (DMA) is a feature used in computer systems to allow hardware components to access the main memory independently of the CPU. This technique enhances data transfer efficiency by enabling peripherals, such as disk drives or network cards, to transfer data directly to or from memory without CPU intervention. As a result, DMA reduces the CPU's workload, freeing it to perform other tasks while data is being transferred in the background. DMA is particularly valuable in high-speed data transfer applications, where minimizing CPU bottlenecks is crucial for maintaining system performance.
