This is a point-of-view driving video of the 8th generation Toyota Hilux. It was filmed during the Auto Focus Summer Test Drive Festival 2023. It was a car event presented by Caltex Philippines, that gave people the opportunity to test drive different brand new vehicles from May 4 to 7 in SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City, Philippines. Impressions/observations during the test drive:
Like the Fortuner GR-S, this vehicle gives out a sporty vibe in its exterior design as well. However, the Hilux GR-S exterior design is more on the rugged off-road capable look since it is a pick-up truck. This theme is also evident with its fender flares, different front grille design (w/ "TOYOTA" lettering rather than a simple logo), and bigger different headlight design compared to the Fortuner. This sporty vibe is achieved by the GR's omission of most of the chrome details that are normally found in the other variants. These details are omitted in the favor of black and red accents throughout the exterior. Climbing in, one would immediately notice the suede/alcantara + leather material of the seats, as well as the GR badging on the headrest which really give it a sporty vibe. There is also a nicely-placed GR badging on the steering wheel, as well as a center stripe at the top; both of which really emphasize the "GR-ness" of this vehicle. The interior materials are mostly leather and suede/alcantara, both of which make the interior high quality. The interior has some similarities with the Fortuner, but there are still some differences in their design and layout. In comparison to the competition, this Hilux has more sportiness compared to the Ford Ranger Wildtrak and the Mazda BT-50 4X4. The Nissan Navara Pro-4X comes close to a sporty exterior design though, but not so much in the interior design. Compared to the 2023 Ranger though, this truck has a smaller and less usage of screens. For a 4x4 truck, the Hilux's use of less screens is subjectively preferable. However, the Hilux still has good tech such as a good-quality 360-degree camera which is helpful in maneuvering this vehicle. Another cool thing in the interior is the cupholder on the driver and passenger side which are placed in front of the A/C vents. These are nice places to put cold drinks to keep them cool.
Being a turbo-diesel, the engine of this truck feels punchy because of the torque being available at lower RPMs. The engine sound being audible from the inside adds to the driver engagement and to the sense of speed and power. Transferring all that power and torque to the wheels is a 6-speed automatic transmission which does it task smoothly enough in automatic mode and is responsive in manual mode. There is a slight delay in manual mode, however that said delay does not impact the usability of the manual mode too much. The steering feedback of the Hilux GR-S is the same with the Fortuner: good weight, feedback, and feel. Comparing it to the competition, the Hilux has a lighter steering weight compared to the BT-50 and the Navara. On the other hand, the Hilux has a heavier steering in comparison to the Ranger. Both the accelerator and brake pedals of this vehicle respond well to driver inputs, and without any delay. The ride comfort of this is good enough for a mid-sized ladder-framed 4x4 pick-up truck. The suspension gives some bodyroll during cornering which is normal for a truck like this.
