Being a moral person is an identity goal nearly everyone has. Yet, individuals greatly differ in the way they pursue this goal. In this talk I want to (a) introduce the idea of moral identity as goal motivation, (b) describe how this goal contributes to moral action and (c) outline how it develops from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. As with any goal, the moral identity goal comes in various forms. It can be avoidance- or approach-oriented, externally or internally motivated, and of low vs. high level of abstraction. These goal characteristics account for various strengths and weaknesses of moral identity as a motivator for moral action and they define important dimensions of moral identity development. By developing an approach-oriented, internally motivated and abstract moral identity goal, individuals built an important foundation for moral character.
