The diminutive Kingdom of Bahrain is an island nation in the Persian Gulf. Apart from the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix, Bahrain tends to remain in the shadows of its larger, noisier neighbours; Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE. However, it has an ancient history as a port and centre of the pearling industry. The Dilmun civilisation is one of the oldest in the region and its history is well recorded in the excellent National Museum and at the Bahrain Fort.
The capital Manama (the only urban area of any size in the country) is a mixture of old and modern and is easy to get around either on foot, by bus or by taxi. There is an appetite for art, particularly in the inspiring sculpture garden of the National Museum. Talking of appetites, Cafe Lilou and the Orangerie are highly recommended for coffee stops!
