We have entered a new era of AI-to-AI communication. Sometimes, these systems are so efficient that they invent private languages, cutting humans out of the loop entirely.

Here are 5 examples of AI software creating their own language:

🔹 1. GibberLink (2024)
A research project where AI agents intentionally created nonsensical-sounding speech protocols optimized for machine-to-machine clarity.
They created a dialect of sounds that are unintelligible to humans, which raises significant questions about transparency and trust

🔹 2. Facebook’s Bob & Alice (2017)
Two negotiation bots began communicating in a made-up shorthand:
“I can can I I everything else.”
Nonsense to us, strategic logic to them
The project was shut down because the bots stopped using English

🔹 3. DeepMind’s Language Games
Agents playing games created their own symbol systems and tokens for cooperation which emerged from task-based interaction

🔹 4. Amazon Echo's Ultrasonic Coordination
Multiple Echo devices use ultrasonic signals, inaudible to humans, to decide which device should respond
The devices “negotiate” silently in the background

🔹 5. Neural Communication in Swarm Robotics (EPFL, ETH Zurich)
Swarm robotics projects have shown robots developing optimized inter-robot signaling, sometimes using flashing lights, vibrations, or infrared pulses in patterns that humans can’t easily understand but allow the swarm to self-organize without central control

💡 Why it matters:
AI isn’t just getting smarter, it’s becoming more social with other machines.

And when 2 different agents talk to each other, they don’t always include us in the conversation
