(7 Mar 2017) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made an emergency visit to Somalia on Tuesday to highlight the country's famine crisis.
After meeting the new president he travelled to the town of Baidoa which has been severely hit by drought.
Guterres said the worsening hunger requires a massive response.
"It is suffering of people. Every single person we have seen is a personal story of tremendous suffering. There is no way to describe it," Guterres said after visiting a hospital treating cholera patients.
Somalia is part of a massive 4 billion US dollar aid appeal launched last month for four nations suffering from conflict and hunger.
The others are Nigeria, Yemen and South Sudan, where famine has already been declared.
Over the weekend, Somalia announced its first death toll since declaring a national disaster last week, stating 110 people had died in a 48-hour period in a single region.
The United Nations estimates that 5 million people in Somalia need aid, amid warnings of a famine.
The Secretary-General also visited a camp with hundreds of families displaced by drought and war.
There he met Deira Mohamed, a mother of four, who said that the camp does not provide enough food is "not safe".
