ISIOLO COUNTY FORGES AHEAD WITH DATA-DRIVEN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

The Isiolo County Government, in collaboration with the Pastoralist Community Development and Sustainability Forum (PACIDA) and a consortium of development and humanitarian partners, convened a pivotal one-day workshop today. The session successfully established the Anticipatory Humanitarian Action Technical Working Group and initiated the development of Isiolo County’s Anticipatory Humanitarian Action Plan.

Senior County officers speaking at the workshop underscored Isiolo’s vulnerability as one of the nation's most disaster-prone counties particularly to cyclical droughts, floods, conflict-related shocks, and disease outbreaks. They stressed the urgent need for robust anticipatory models to replace traditional, reactive intervention methods.

“Investing in anticipatory action is not just about saving money; it’s fundamentally about protecting the dignity and survival of our people and their livelihoods,” stated Barnabas Esunyen, the Chief Officer for Peace and Reconciliation.

Judith Karendi, the Acting Chief Officer for Public Participation, Gender, and Culture Ag., emphasized the community aspect, saying the plan "will ensure that our people are not just subjects of aid, but active participants in their own resilience building."

A Guiding Document for Early Action
Once finalized, the county's anticipatory plan will serve as a guiding document for coordinated, timely, data-driven, and cost-effective early action triggers. This includes establishing clear financing triggers designed to protect lives, livestock, essential livelihoods, and assets before climatic or conflict-related shocks escalate into full-blown humanitarian emergencies.

PACIDA and its partners firmly pledged their continuous support to bolster Isiolo’s disaster risk management systems. Their commitment focuses on improving multi-sector early warning capacities and significantly enhancing resilience among local communities.
