On May 15, 2023, the Genealogical Research Society of New Orleans (GRSNO) welcomed Dr. Michelle Boissiere to speak on the topic of "An Introduction to Genetics for the Genealogist."

Dr. Boissiere, head of the Department of Biology at Xavier University of Louisiana, shared her insights on the intersection of genetics and genealogy. She provided information to assist amateur genealogists with interpreting consumer genetic testing results and reconcile history with scientific results, with examples from her own family history.

Dr. Boissiere has been a faculty member at Xavier since 1994, and her primary teaching responsibility centers on genetics. She holds degrees in Biology from Xavier (B.S.) and from Tulane University (M.S. and Ph.D.). She has also edited and contributed to several Biology and Genetics textbooks. She is a lifelong resident of New Orleans, and her family has resided in southeast Louisiana for eight generations.
