OUR GAVIN JAMES JOURNEY
In September 2018 #Ceol2018 was officially launched by RTÉ 2FM presenter and Ceol curator Eoghan McDermott. As part of the campaign there was a competition that challenged schools to record their own version of any of the hit songs that had been specially recorded in Irish by the original artists that produced them for the #Ceol2018 CD. Moyne College Irish teacher, Grace Carolan, proposed that the school take on the challenge. The school’s music teacher, Tara Doherty, worked with the choir on their entry. The teachers and students decided to cover the Gavin James track,“I gConai” (Always) featuring the full choir with soloist Louise Langan. Local sound engineer Ray Forde recorded the track for them and fellow student Kuba Adamczyk helped them film their own video to accompany the recording which they posted on the school’s Facebook page and which has already garnered over 30,000 views. Moyne College was duly declared the winner of the national #Ceol2018 competition which had over 120 entrants.
A few days passed when suddenly Gavin James through his official Twitter page replied to a Moyne College tweet, congratulating the choir on its unreal achievement, leaving them dumbstruck with the following invitation: “Do you all want to jump up on stage for the gig in the Royal Theatre Castlebar on the 29th of December. Have a little sing-song as Gaeilge?.” The answer was never going to be anything other than a resounding YES. Gavin’s manager made contact with the school and informed them “whatever it takes, let’s make this happen.” To say the students and staff were ecstatic was an understatement. Plans were put in place and the choir made their way to the TF Royal Hotel & Theatre early on Saturday 29th December to perform a sound check with Gavin and his band. Doors opened, the choir took to their seats to get to see the international artist perform live on stage. On queue the choir made their way backstage and when called, proceeded to centre stage. Lead vocalist Louise Langan gave an astounding performance of iGconaí with Gavin assisted by the choir on chorus much to the delight of the crowd. The massive crowd in attendance then rose to their feet to give a standing ovation. Upon leaving the hotel to make their way to the bus the students in the choir were applauded by the remaining crowd all the way to their bus. This whole experience was made possible by a lot of people and huge thanks to all of them. This is something that this group of students will look back on fondly for the rest of their lives. They say that school days are the best days of your life, well for this bunch of students this certainly rings true.
