Jamaica has made a commitment to eliminate Child Labour in all its forms, by next year, 2025.

STATIN estimates that 38,000 children are involved in Child Labour here in Jamaica. Half of these children are engaged in the worst forms of Child Labour: in the sex trade, child prostitution, and other illegal activities.

Others are involved in various forms of hazardous work: exposed to dangerous chemicals in agriculture, working in garages, construction sites, in fishing, the wholesale and retail trade, working on the streets in informal tourism and the entertainment sectors in night clubs and massage parlours.

Still others work in their homes, tending livestock or collecting the family’s water supply before going to school, or staying away from school altogether, to take care of younger siblings.

Child Labour robs our children of their childhoods, their opportunities for education and blights their futures.

Today, Jamaica again joins the international community in raising awareness. Let’s Act on Our Commitments: End Child Labour.
