The stone above the arch bearing the date and the initials of the original owners of the business.
This Boat yard and dry dock changed hands several times over the years.
I understand that at one time it was home to an 1890 (Philadelphia Grasshopper) Steam Engine that drove a huge winch that used to haul out vessels up to 900 tons.
There also used to be a well known historic crane on this site, that has only relatively recently sadly been removed.
It would be such a shame if this wonderful old building and chimney are ever demolished, and such a waste of a rare dry dock of this type.
I've seen pictures dated back to 1930 with a huge ship in the dock supported with timbers.
I have a horrible feeling that it will indeed be demolished though, so that more big ugly modern industrial business buildings (like it's neighbours), or even worse, more trendy waterside apartments can be built..
Though it's doubtful, I hope someone can possibly restore it and get the site operational again..
