At the Taking Off the Mask workshop at Ross Middle School, Ashanti Branch asked students how they were doing.
They responded the way most people do—good, fine, alright.

But when he asked why so many young people say they’re fine even when they’re not, the truth came forward:
it feels uncomfortable to share, people might not understand, and sometimes it feels safer to hide than explain.

These responses reveal the mask students learn to wear early—the one that keeps real feelings tucked away.

As the workshop continued and a few students opened up, others recognized themselves in those experiences.
The room shifted.
They realized they weren’t the only ones carrying unspoken weight.
That realization is the beginning of trust.

For the adults supporting them—parents, teachers, mentors, and advocates—this work is meaningful and demanding.
