The Gaisberg is an offshoot of the Osterhorn Group and borders the Salzburg Basin in the east. It lies entirely in the state of Salzburg. Due to its location and easy accessibility, it is one of the most important local recreation areas in the city of Salzburg and a very good vantage point of the city and the Berchtesgaden Alps. The western flank forms the Salzburg landscape area (district) Gaisberg. The foothills of the Gaisberg that protrude into the settlement area of the city of Salzburg between the districts of Parsch and Gnigl (Obergnigl) is the Kühberg. Another northeastern foothill with a rocky peak is the Nockstein, which belongs to the municipality of Koppl, while the southern range is the Rauchenbühel (988 m above sea level), which is partly in the municipality of Elsbethen. A small part of the Gaisberg in the western escarpments, the so-called Kapaun Walls below the summit plateau, is protected as the Gaisberg natural forest reserve.
