1. Ise katagami is a craft where intricate patterns are carved in a special type of paper called katajigami. This paper is then used as a stencil to decorate kimonos and other textiles through resist dyeing, leaving the pattern of the paper white on the dyed cloth.

The Ise Katagami Preservation Association was recognized for its efforts in researching and refining the technique of Ise katagami, historically used to dye patterns on kimonos and other various textiles, and passing it on to the next generation of artisans. Furthermore, the fact that new successors have emerged from the course taught by the Association, in which inexperienced people are invited to participate, was also highly valued.

Narration:
Ise katagami is the craft of making finely-engraved paper stencils. These stencils are used to dye patterns on various fabrics. They have been used since the Edo period to decorate kimonos and samurai formal attire.

"This is how it's carved!"

In 2003, the Preservation Association founded a course to teach this craft to new generations. The students start by making carving knives. Guided by the craftsmen, they hone their skills over many years. The engraving techniques are divided into 4 categories. The oldest one is tsukibori, where pictorial patterns are freely carved. In dogubori, the carvings are made in single strokes using patterned knives. Kiribori designates patterns made of countless circles. And finally, shimabori, composed of fine strips reinforced with threads. A craftsperson can spend their entire life mastering one technique. In 2023, for the 1st time in 20 years, 7 students passed the final exam and were recognized as new artisans.

Recent studies have shown that Ise katagami designs have influenced foreign arts and crafts, which led to renewed interest. This proud tradition of Suzuka will now keep on developing thanks to a new generation of craftspeople.
