This is a short piece explaining how Tolkien viewed the "otherness" of the source of his material.

How for much of the creative process he was "not inventing but reporting".

And how at times he had to stop until "what really happened" came through.

Part of me wishes that more fantasy writers would just stop writing until this kind of inspiration hits them.

Rather than frenetically engaging in "world building" it might be better to engage in "world-intuiting" like Tolkien.

Our bookshelves would be lighter but each individual tome might be much more... heavy.

One can live in hope!
