Perched on a hilltop at ≈ 4,166 meters (13,668 ft) above sea level, Key Monastery — also spelled Ki / Kee / Kye Gompa — is the largest monastery in Spiti Valley and a revered centre for Buddhist teachings.
Believed to date back to the 11th century, Key Gompa is rooted in the ancient Buddhist lineage linked to the legendary translator-saint Rinchen Zangpo (through the Kadampa tradition), originally founded by his disciple Dromtön.
Over centuries, the monastery weathered invasions, fires, and earthquakes — yet each time, it rose again, adding layers of architecture that give it a fort-like, multi-tiered structure, unlike any other monastery in India.
Inside its labyrinth of halls you’ll find ancient murals, thangkas, rare manuscripts, prayer wheels, and a powerful aura of peace that feels almost timeless.
