What is a disinterment? While they aren't common, a disinterment involves exhuming a burial vault or casket from its resting place and transporting it to a new grave plot or to be transported to a cremation center.

Over the past 2 months, I've been involved in 4 disinterments. Over my nearly 10 year career, we've only been involved in around a dozen disinterment situations.

In most cases, the vault and casket are relocated to a new plot either within the cemetery or to a cemetery where more family members have purchased plots.

Generally, the burial vault is not opened unless the burial vault is damaged in the exhumation process or if the family has chosen for their loved one to be cremated.

As with all tasks assigned to us as vaultmen, we treat this process with as much care and respect as possible.
